Before your session
- Share what matters: Tell me who is coming, which relationships you want to celebrate, and any group photographs that are especially important to you.
- Tell me what helps: Share sensory preferences, mobility needs, communication preferences, or anything that would make the experience more comfortable.
- Keep the day manageable: Where possible, avoid stacking too many activities around your session. Give yourself enough travel time that arriving does not feel like a race.
- Prepare children simply: Describe the session as time together with someone taking photographs. Avoid making it a test of whether they can smile correctly.
What to bring
- Everyday essentials: Water, wipes, and anything your family normally needs while out.
- A familiar comfort item: A favorite toy or blanket can help a child feel at ease, even if it never appears in a photograph.
- A small snack: Choose something that works for your child's needs and is easy to manage.
- A backup outfit: Especially useful for younger children or an outdoor location.
During your session
Let your attention return to your family rather than constantly checking the camera. Holding hands, sharing a quiet joke, or comforting a child can be part of the story rather than an interruption.
If your child needs a pause, tell me. There is no need to apologize for a child having feelings, and you do not need to force affection or an expression that does not feel natural.
Next step: Tell me one small thing about your family you hope these photographs will preserve.
